Once again, BSUnion is back in collaboration with UPP in organising the eagerly awaited Islamic annual event, Kem Ibadah IV 1433H/2012M. This event aims not only to gain more knowledge on Islam but to also appreciate and comprehend our day-to-day ibadah. The event is open to all Bruneian students.

Update: BBSS Paintball Tournament 2012 Subsidization

As agreed and promised, BruManch is happy to announce that we will provide a £10 subsidization on the entrance fee per player. This means you will only have to pay £30! The subsidization is double the amount of what you have paid to be a member of BruManch so there's nothing to lose :)

Salam and hi everyone!

Hope everyone is staying fit despite the revision period because it's that time of year again for the annual BBSS (Brunei Birmingham Students Society) Paintball Tournament 2012! If you're looking to blow off some steam and shoot someone after the stressful exams, where better than here! :D

This year's event is going to be held on Saturday, 25th February 2012 at a new location - the world famous National Paintball Fields, a 200 acre movie themed action adventure park and is the UK's best paintball site!

BruManch always sends a team to represent our society every year so what are you waiting for? We need 15 players this time around with a fee of £40 per player (total of £600 per team). BruManch has agreed to subsidize the fee for each player :) If you're interested, please email us your details, including your:

Details should be submitted as soon as possible and latest by Wednesday, 18th January 2012. There's only 12 teams playing and we want to be one of them. Supporters are more than welcome to join (with a transportation fee of course)! :p

10 Study Tips!

We kid!

With exams right around the corner, remember to balance your time and spend your holiday wisely between revising and having fun. Before you study for your exam, you might want to use a few strategies to boost your memory of important information. There are a number of tried and tested techniques for improving memory. These strategies have been established within cognitive psychology literature and offer a number of great ways to improve memory, enhance recall and increase retention of information.

1. Focus your attention on the materials you are studying.
Attention is one of the major components of memory. In order for information to move from short-term memory into long-term memory, you need to actively attend to this information. Try to study in a place free of distractions such as television, music and other diversions.

2. Avoid cramming by establishing regular study sessions.
According to Bjork (2001), studying materials over a number of session’s gives you the time you need to adequately process the information. Research has shown that students who study regularly remember the material far better that those did all of their studying in one marathon session.

3. Structure and organize the information you are studying.
Researchers have found that information is organized in memory in related clusters. You can take advantage of this by structuring and organizing the materials you are studying. Try grouping similar concepts and terms together, or make an outline of your notes and textbook readings to help group related concepts.

4. Utilize mnemonic devices to remember information.
Mnemonic devices are a technique often used by students to aid in recall. A mnemonic is simply a way to remember information. For example, you might associate a term you need to remember with a common item that you are very familiar with. The best mnemonics are those that utilize positive imagery, humor or novelty. You might come up with a rhyme, song or joke to help remember a specific segment of information.

5. Elaborate and rehearse the information you are studying.
In order to recall information, you need to encode what you are studying into long-term memory. One of the most effective encoding techniques is known as elaborative rehearsal. An example of this technique would be to read the definition of a key term, study the definition of that term and then read a more detailed description of what that term means. After repeating this process a few times, your recall of the information will be far better.

6. Relate new information to things you already know.
When you are studying unfamiliar material, take the time to think about how this information relates to things that you already know. By establishing relationships between new ideas and previously existing memories, you can dramatically increase the likelihood of recalling the recently learned information.

7. Visualize concepts to improve memory and recall.
Many people benefit greatly from visualizing the information they study. Pay attention to the photographs, charts and other graphics in your textbooks. If you do not have visual cues to help, try creating your own. Draw charts or figures in the margins of your notes or use highlighters or pens in different colors to group related ideas in your written study materials.

8. Teach new concepts to another person.
Research suggests that reading materials out loud significantly improves memory of the material. Educators and psychologists have also discovered that having students actually teach new concepts to others enhances understanding and recall. You can use this approach in your own studies by teaching new concepts and information to a friend or study partner.

9. Pay extra attention to difficult information.
Have you ever noticed how it’s sometimes easier to remember information at the beginning or end of a chapter? Researchers have found that the position of information can play a role in recall, which is known as the serial position effect. While recalling middle information can be difficult, you can overcome this problem by spending extra time rehearsing this information or try restructuring the information so it will be easier to remember. When you come across an especially difficult concept, devote some extra time to memorizing the information.

10. Vary your study routine.
Another great way to increase your recall is to occasionally change your study routine. If you are accustomed to studying in one specific location, try moving to a different spot to study. If you study in the evening, try to spend a few minutes each morning reviewing the information you studied the previous night. By adding an element of novelty to your study sessions, you can increase the effectiveness of your efforts and significantly improve your long-term recall.

December Happenings Around Manchester

This coming week through December, there are a lot of things lined up for fellow BruManchers and anyone in Manchester.

Doki Doki

Doki Doki, The Manchester Japanese Festival, is a unique event that will celebrate both traditional and modern Japanese culture. Throughout the day there will be talks, demonstrations, parades and other events showcasing manga, anime, fashion, martial arts, film, music and other aspects of Japanese culture, past and present, as well as retail stalls, artist stands and a games area. Hot and cold Japanese food from a number of local retailers will also be available to festival goers both inside the venue and restaurants nearby.

The comprises a daytime event, running from 10am (9am for Early Bird ticket-holders) until 7pm, followed by an evening cosplay party, from 9pm–2am.

Christmas Markets

Christmas shopping is a festive day out at Manchester's Christmas Markets. Considered to be amongst the best in UK and Europe, the markets transform the city centre with their charming traditional wooden chalets. Get into the Christmas spirit while browsing the twinkling stalls and soaking up the unique, bustling atmosphere. The markets are bigger than ever, now at 8 city centre locations, all within an accessible square mile. New for 2011, the Triangle stalls are now wooden houses and new weekend stalls can be found on King Street.

BruManch October/November Events Roundup: Aidilfitri and AGM & Aidiladha Celebration

BruManch Hari Raya Aidilfitri Celebration 2011

1st October 2011 marks the very first BruManch event in Manchester this academic year, held traditionally in the St. Gabriels Halls, BruManch Hari Raya Aidilfitri was celebrated with great colourful turnouts. The event started with a recitation of doa by the former Religious Officer, Hifdzullah, followed by a speech by BruManch’s very own president, Ain. Of course, with every ~~Bruneian~~ Hari Raya celebrations, a lavish buffet of amazing foods was there to entertain the stomachs of the attendees, cooked by our very own Bruneian chefs!

BruManch AGM and AidilAdha Celebration

BruManch committee elected five more members last Saturday 5th November 2011 during the BruManch AGM and Hari Raya AidilAdha Celebration.

The event was started by a recitation of doa followed by Maghrib prayers and takbir. After jamuan the newly elected members were announced and this was followed by Isya' prayers.

Congratulations to the newly elected vice-president Aez, religious officers Omar and Nadiah and public relation officer assistants Gbah and Music!

Message from the LufBru Society

Hello & Assalamualaikum warahmatullah. How’s summer treating you guys? Good? I sincerely hope that you are reading this in the best of health. I know some of you guys might still be having your exams and some have already completed everything, curently relaxing at homeland.

As you all know that Brunei Society in Loughborough University is going to hold 5th LufBru Summer Games on 28th till 30th July in Brunei Darussalam and I am sure all of us are looking forward to the event. The LSG’11 Exec Committee is now searching for volunteers to help us in making the event a tremendous success. All we require from you is:

Your Name

Your Place of Study
Your Contact Details IN BRUNEI
Your Preferred Day(select two or all) 28th, 29th 30th July.

The tasks allocated to Volunteers will range from helping out the Committee with general control of participants and audience, to being linesmen for Badminton, so if you think you have the skills, do register with us at lufbrusg2011@gmail.com . It is preferable that you are not participating in the sports being held and at least 18 years old and above.

The DEADLINE FOR VOLUNTEER REGISTRATION is 11 June 2011, so don’t hesitate if you’re interested, okay? =D

Here’s a HUGE plus: Volunteers would be provided with certificates, food, drinks and gifts like the Volunteers stash – certainly not something you’d want to miss out on. However upon considering your registration, we would like you to ensure that you are free throughout the Games session, and that you abide by the rules and regulations for volunteering, which are as follows:

Throughout the Games, you must maintain self discipline and would need to abide by the rules of the Games at all times.
If you didn’t attend on you preferred day, you will be ask to pay for the stash.
All Volunteers MUST BE PRESENT according to the timetable drawn for them.
Volunteers are to be present at least 3/4 of the day’s event
All Volunteers MUST follow the dress code for the Games: appropriate attire – long sports pants.
Volunteers should be willing to participate with any task given to them by Executive committee even though it’s outside their area of expertise.
Volunteers need to ALWAYS refer to respective committee present should there be any difficulties.

It is our pleasure to announce that Loughborough Students' Union Brunei Society will be holding our annual 5th LufBru Summer Games, 2011 in Brunei.

LufBru Summer Games last year was regarded as the most organized summer games so far. This year we hope for an even better summer games with your participation and comments from previous years.

Details of the LufBru summer games are as follows: :

Date : 28th, 29th, 30th July 2011.

Venue : Multipurpose Hall Berakas, Multipurpose Hall Youth & Sports (to be confirmed)

Sports to be contested: NETBALL, INDOOR FOOTBALL & BADMINTON (MEN'S & WOMEN'S SINGLES, MEN'S & WOMEN'S DOUBLES, MIXED DOUBLES)

This year, our aim is to provide better services to participants and your satisfaction is our goal. Thus we're making somechanges on the rules and regulations for this year's Summer Games - this was based on the comments and feedbackfrom players in the previous games - hence we do hope that everyone will enjoy this games better! Please take note on the amendments listed below:

These rules are imposed for IMPORT PLAYERS (Non-UK based students):

Only ONE import player is allowed for each team.
Form Sixth student or any secondary school students are NOT eligible to participate in this year's summer games as import players - these are students who have not had their A-level public exams yet.
'Sixth-form - to - University' transition students are also NOT eligible to participate - this means that an import player must be receiving full-time education at the time of their participation; students who have finished their A-level exams and have not started their higher education course in universities are NOT allowed.
Students from a Brunei Government-Based Higher Institute are allowed to participate.
Postgraduate students who wish to participate must have graduated from their institute within ONE year prior to the date of the games.

1. Studying In Manchester.

2. Transportation

There shouldn't be any worries regarding the transportation. Bus services are frequent most of the time. There's no need to wait long for the bus to come (unless it is weekend). Student's here usually buy the UniRider from StageCoach Company, as it's more convenient and a lot more cheaper if to total the cost of transportation for 2 semesters. well it's all depends on personal preferences and where do you stay. However most us would argue that it is super useful during winter! and for those who has lots of classes=) . click here for more details for bus routes, price and etc.

3. Crime

As of the crime rates, no Bruneians have ever been involved in crime before, hopefully that will never happen. The thing is, you have to know how to keep yourself protected. Never show off valuable stuffs publicly. Don't leave doors unlocked and windows wide opened. Never let strangers into your house unless you called them (repairman etc). All the basic things. Insya Allah, no one will do harm to you. The important thing is, never walk out in the dark all by yourself. No matter where you are, even outside of Manchester, if you're all alone, people might not be hesitant to approach you. But yeh, it isn't as bad as you might think it is. Everyone is happy in Manchester.

4. Sports & Life in Manchester.

These two things are the most least you should be concern about. As part of BruManch (Bruneian in Manchester) the society it self will offer you a lot (seriously) events and activities which some of it are weekly events. so to think that you will be alone and lifeless here is surely going to be impossible. Just Find and talk to us then insyAllah you'll be FINE!

List of BruManch events can be find in this blog. For weekly activities are for example tadarus Quran for khatam al-quran (Quranic Circle) and BruManch weekly Sports meeting.

5. Accommodation.

Most Bruneian live in Rusholme @ Curry mile, its seriously just 20minutes Bruneian walk to the university (depends on where your building is). This is an amazing place to live. with Halal food and restaurants are all lies along the main street. In my case, I just need to walk out the door to get the halal meat. This area is however is not really convenient for those who are studying in the north campus, but again if you have the unirider it shouldn't be a problem.

if you prefer to stay in hall but you still want to be close with the other Bruneians and halal food, I would strongly recommend that you to apply for MCR south (Rusholme). click here for detail.

Cost of living:

house: 150-270 pounds (by size of room) - mostly exclusive from bills

Hall : 300ish - Inclusive

6. Muslim In Manchester.

Manchester is full with muslims. You can find access to prayer halls in the uni itself. There is one hall in the North campus, and another one in the South campus, Here you don't have to worry for wearing hijab/tudung, no one will discriminate you. In fact you'll be amazed to see this fashion hijab runway in Manchester.Furthermore, all the universities in Manchester joined the world Islamic awareness week, as for this year (2011) it was the most awesome week ever for all muslimah and non-muslim as you can get your hand a henna for free!

20 Exam Tips!

Assalamualaikum wbt and Hello BruManchers!

Praise be to Allaah and peace and blessings be upon the Messenger and upon his family and companions.

The Muslim student puts his trust in Allaah when facing the tests of this world, and he seeks His help whilst following the prescribed means, in accordance with the words of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him):

“The strong believer is better and is more beloved to Allaah than the weak believer, although both are good. Strive to attain that which will benefit you and seek the help of Allaah, and do not feel helpless.” (Saheeh Muslim, hadeeth no. 2664)

Among those means are the following:

Turning to Allaah by making du’aa’ in any way that is prescribed in Islam, such as saying, “Rabbiy ishrah li sadri wa yassir li amri (O my Lord, expand my chest and make things easy for me).”

Getting used to sleeping early and going to exams on time.

Preparing all required or permitted equipment such as pens, rulers and setsquares, calculators and watches, because being well prepared helps one to answer questions.

Reciting the du’aa’ for leaving the house: “Bismillaah, tawakkaltu ‘ala Allaah, wa laa hawla wa laa quwwata illa Billaah. Allaahumma inni a’oodhu bika an adilla aw udalla, aw azilla aw uzalla, aw azlima aw uzlama, aw ajhala aw yujhala ‘alayya (In the name of Allaah, I put my trust in Allaah, and there is no strength and no power except with Allaah. O Allaah, I seek refuge with You lest I should stray or be led astray, lest I slip (commit a sin unintentionally) or be tripped, lest I oppress or be oppressed, lest I behave foolishly or be treated foolishly).”Do not forget to seek your parents’ approval, for their du’aa’ for you will be answered.

Mention the name of Allaah before you start, for mentioning the name of Allaah is prescribed when beginning any permissible action; this brings blessing, and seeking the help of Allaah is one of the means of strength.

Fear Allaah with regard to your classmates, and do not be affected by their anxiety or fear just before the exam, for anxiety is a contagious disease. Instead, make them feel optimistic by saying good words as prescribed in Islam. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) was optimistic when he heard the name of Suhayl (which means “easy”) and he said: “Things have been made easy for you.” He used to like to hear the words ‘Yaa Raashid, when he went out for any purpose. So be optimistic that you and your brothers will pass this exam.

Remembering Allaah (dhikr) dispels anxiety and tension. If something is too difficult for you, then pray to Allaah to make it easy for you. Whenever Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah (may Allaah have mercy on him) found something too difficult to understand, he would say, “O You Who taught Ibraaheem, teach me; O You Who caused Sulaymaan to understand, cause me to understand.”

Choose a good place to sit during the exam, if you can. Keep your back straight, and sit on the chair in a healthy manner.

Look over the exam first. Studies advise spending 10% of the exam time in reading the questions carefully, noting the important words and dividing one’s time between the questions.

Plan to answer the easy questions first, then the difficult ones. Whilst reading the questions, write notes and ideas which you can use in your answers later.

Answer questions according to importance.

Start by answering the easy questions which you know. Then move on to the questions which carry high marks, and leave till the end the questions to which you do not know the answers, or which you think will take a long time to produce an answer or which do not carry such high marks.

Take your time to answer, for the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Deliberation is from Allaah and haste is from the Shaytaan.” (A hasan hadeeth. Saheeh al-Jaami, 3011).

Think carefully about the answer and choose the right answer when answering multiple-choice questions. Deal with them in the following manner. If you are sure that you have chosen the right answer, then beware of waswasah (insinuating whispers from the Shaytaan). If you are not sure, then start by eliminating the wrong or unlikely answers, then choose the correct answer based on what you think is most likely to be correct. If you guessed at a correct answer then do not change it unless you are sure that it is wrong – especially if you will lose marks for a wrong answer. Research indicates that the correct answer is usually that which the student thinks of first.

In written exams, collect your thoughts before you start to answer.Write an outline for your answer with some words which will indicate the ideas which you want to discuss. Then number the ideas in the sequence in which you want to present them.

Write the main points of your answer at the beginning of the line, because this is what the examiner is looking for, and he may not see what he is looking for if it is in the middle of the page and he is in a hurry.

Devote 10% of the time for reviewing your answers. Take your time in reviewing, especially in mathematical problems and writing numbers. Resist the desire to hand in the exam papers quickly, and do not let the fact that some people are leaving early bother you. They may be among the people who have handed in their papers too early.

If you discover after the exam that you answered some questions incorrectly, then take that as a lesson in the importance of being well prepared in the future, and not rushing to answer questions. Accept the will and decree of Allaah and do not fall prey to frustration and despair. Remember the hadeeth of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), “If anything befalls you, do not say, ‘If only I had done such and such.’ Rather say, ‘Qadar Allaah wa maa sha’a kaan (the decree of Allaah and what He wills happened),’ for saying ‘if only’ opens the door for the Shaytaan.” (Saheeh Muslim, and the first part of this hadeeth was mentioned above).

Note that cheating is haraam whether it is in foreign language tests or any other tests. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, “Whoever cheats is not one of us.” It is wrongdoing and it is a haraam means of attaining a degree or certificate, etc., that you have no right to. The consensus is that cheating is a kind of cooperation in sin and transgression. So do without that which is haraam, and Allaah will suffice you from His bounty. Reject all offers of haraam things that come to you from others. Whoever gives up a thing for the sake of Allaah, Allaah will compensate him with something better. You have to denounce and resist evil, and tell the authorities about any such thing that you see during the exam, or before or after it. This is not the forbidden kind of slander rather it is denouncing evil which is obligatory.

Advise those who buy or sell questions or post them on the Internet etc., or who prepare cheat notes. Tell them to fear Allaah, and tell them of the ruling on what they are doing and on the money they earn from that. Tell them that the time they are spending in preparing these haraam things, if they spent it in studying, or answering previous exams, or helping one another to understand the subject before the exam, that would be better for them than doing these haraam things.

- Remember what you have prepared for the Hereafter, and the questions of the examination in the grave, and how to be saved on the Day of Resurrection. Whoever is saved from the Fire and admitted to Paradise will indeed have succeeded.

We ask Allaah to make us succeed in this world and cause us to be among those who are victorious and saved in the Hereafter, for He is the All-Hearing Who answers prayer.

Assalamualaikum and HELLO BRUMANCHERS,

The time has come for this year's committee 2010/2011 to step down and for the new committee members to be elected. The election will be held on Monday, 25th April 2011 at the place to be confirmed. Not only that, we will be having the Appreciation Dinner for the committee members and volunteers for the Pertandingan Lagu Dakwah held few days back! (Details soon). I wish to encourage all members of BruManch to attend as it is very important for us to elect the right committee to lead the future Bruneians for the future session 2011/2012.

The process for nominations
Each member has the right to nominate a candidate for any of the posts listed below.

1. To run for a post or to nominate someone, please send an e-mail to ezahrahman@gmail.com.

2. No person shall be restricted from running any position. It does not matter if you are in final year or the first year. You only have to be sure you are willing to commit to the role you take up.

3. The deadline for nominations by e-mail is Thursday night, 21st April 2011 2359 hrs (11:59 PM)!!!

4. The subject heading for nominations should be "Nominations".

The positions to consider are listed below: (subject to change, depends on the next president to add more people)

He/She will be in charge of the general running of the society.

He/She will be in charge of Contacting members, dealing with people outside the society (e.g. companies & other societies).
He/She will look after the general welfare of the BruManch family in terms of housing, money matters, transportation, food, etc
He/She will be in charge Event management, including exploring and securing venues for events and planning dates and activities for the events.
He/she will be in charge in maintaining the society's website
He/She will organise sports activities for the BruManch family when requested or when he/she thinks you have to TRAIN for whatever Bruneian games.

He/She will organise religious events as well as well as handling any religious related matters.

Pertandingan Lagu Dakwah 2011

Assalamualaikum and hello!

Alhamdulillah, the event went well! The BruManch Society would like to personally thank Unit Penuntut-Penuntut and Brunei Students' Union for organizing, the committee members, volunteers and the participating groups for making the event a success and not to forget everyone for attending and meramaikan the event! We also would like to congratulate ICUBS and BruHull for getting the 1st place for the male and female categories respectively! For the rest of the groups, you can try again next year, insyaAllah! :D

Without further ado, we would like to present the six performances:

For the first place, male category goes to the first group that performed, ICUBS! Lead (ketua kumpulan) by their Religious Officer, Muhammad Nurul Hafiz Haji Mohammad Yussof, the group made their way to the top by performing a medley of Maher Zain's Insya Allah and Rabbani's Intifada, with an original input on the lyrics which relates to the Brunei National day theme. We don't have the video just yet as of now but we will surely upload the video ASAP! Just watch this space!

Second place, goes to Al Muhajirun min Al-Lufbru, lead (ketua kumpulan) by Muhammad Najib Latif with the song Assolatuwassalam and a very creative original poem! We just let the video do the talking:

Third place goes to the BruManch's Rijaalul Musaafir lead (ketua kumpulan) by Muhammad Hifdzullah Haji Mat Yamin and the solo was lead by our very own vice president, Abang Muhammad Masrur Abang Haji Zainuddin. They performed an acapella medley of songs by Opick and included a very creative twist to their performance:

For the female category, the first place goes to BruHull lead (ketua kumpulan) by Norapizah Zailani. They performed an original number which really relates to the theme of the event!

Second place goes to Lufbru Nur Zahraa lead (ketua kumpulan) by Dk. Siti Nur Azriah Pg. Metussin.

Third place goes to Zaharatunnajah (Brunei Birmingham Students' Society) lead (ketua kumpulan) by Norhidayatul Mukminah Haji Puteh.

leave the bus station on Chorlton Street
turn left and walk the short distance up to Portland Street

look out for buses in the 40s and ask the driver for the University: Ask for the University or Students' Union
get off at Dover Street near Holy Name Church
cross Oxford Road to the Union which is a large, grey, three-storey building (shown above)

a. If you arrive at Victoria Station:
i. Best take a cab
ii. Catch the link bus to Piccadilly Station and a train to Oxford Road Station

b. If you arrive at Piccadilly Station you could:
i. Take a cab
ii. Catch the 15,41,42,43,111, 142 and 143 bus which goes from the City (Piccadilly garden) straight down to Oxford Road- Rusholme- Fallow field- Wittington. Look for the building, most of the bus stop right in front of at the opposite road of the building but some will stop at the next stop.
iii. Catch another train to Oxford Road Station
iv. Catch the tram into Piccadilly Gardens and then a bus in the 40s to the Union

c. If you arrive at Oxford Road Station you could:
i. Walk out of the station taking steps on right or following the road, turn right onto Oxford Road and walk for ten minutes to the Union
ii. Find your way to Oxford Road as above, cross over and take a bus (same bus number as above)

Car parking
Official car parking for the Union and its venues is in the Theatre Car Park (http://www.manchester.ac.uk/aboutus/travel/maps/numerical/) just below, or south of, the Academy, building number 78 - it is labelled Car Park F on the map. Access to Theatre Car Park is via Denmark Street off Oxford Road.
Turn right on to Acomb Street and right at end (on to Dilworth Street), over the humps to the car park entrance two hundred metres up on the left.
You need pound coins to operate the barrier (after 4.30pm).
There is a multi-storey car park on the corner of Booth Street East and Upper Brook Street which provides safe and convenient public parking a short walk from the Students' Union building and the Academy venues. It is labelled Multi-Storey Car Park B on the map.

Our dress code will portray our theme this year. So be creative and have fun with your wardrobe, may it be a classic cheongsam or a traditional baju kurong/baju melayu, or even a small effort of showing a hint of tradition, as long as it depicts the theme it will do! =) We will also have fun games and competition like charades and best dressed.

The dinner will be a buffet and it will cost £8.50 per person, however for members we will subsidise £2.50 off it, making it only £6 per person. Yay!

It will be a cultural night to remember!

Dear BruManch Members,

I am sure that everyone is waiting for the news on BruManch Talentime. Due to several unavoidable issues there will be no BruManch Talentime this year. The good news is, Brunei Student's Union (BSU) and BruManch Society in collaboration with Unit Penuntut-Penuntut (UPP) would like to present to you; Pertandingan Lagu Dakwah which will be held on 19th March 2011 in Council Chamber, University of Manchester Student Union.

And we would like to get few volunteers for this event! So, for those of you who are interested to help out and work behind the scenes for the event please let us know by emailing us at brumanch@gmail.com! Free Volunteer T-Shirt will be given for the Volunteers. So please include your size detail in the email.

Volunteers will be divided into each of the following:

- Food
- Ushering
- Backstage

How are you all? Hope all still in a good shape despite Burning in this Exams period. Anyway It's the time of the year again where the BBSS (BRUMINGHAM SOCIETY) organizing their annual event called the MADPAINTBALL 2011. Therefore BruManch are planning to participate this Awesome event!=)

It will be held on the 26th of February 2011. (Saturday)

The registration just started roughly 30minutes ago and will be closed on the 6th of February BUT BruManch are planning to register early as possible as this year its only open for 12 teams!:3

The Total registration fees are 490 pounds per team that made of 16 people (12 on field and 4 reserves).
BUT ====>>>> BruManch will SUBSIDIZE roughly1/3 of the fees, so each will only have to pay 20.50 pounds!

Update: E-code Non Halal Food

salam to all Muslims,

do we aware of what we are eating and buying.. Is it halal? or suspicious?

Halal meaning lawful or permitted. The opposite of halal is haram, which means unlawful or prohibited. Halal and haram are universal terms that apply to all facets of life. However, we will use these terms only in relation to food products, meat products, cosmetics, personal care products, pharmaceuticals, food ingredients, and food contact materials.

While many things are clearly halal or haram, there are some things which are not clear. Further information is needed to categorize them as halal or haram. Such items are often referred to as mashbooh, which means doubtful or questionable.

so please be aware of these unclear things which i think more important, don't let the nafsu inside let us to try something that is categorize as mashbosh. If you are hesitating if its halal or not, please leave it=).

O Lord!-while his food is unlawful, his drink is unlawful, his clothing unlawful, and he is nourished unlawfully, so how can he be answered!” (Muslim).

UPP: New Claims Form

Message from the UPP

The Unit Penuntut-Penuntut (UPP) is currently implementing a new system to improve the process of the reimbursement of claims made by scholarship students in the United Kingdom and EIRE.

The introduction of the new forms is to ensure that claims will be processed within the stated 2 – 3 week period. Every claim sent into the UPP after 1 January 2011 is required to have the Lampiran A(the claim letter) and Lampiran B (the checklist).

Lampiran B ensures that before a claim is sent to the UPP, all relevant documents are attached allowing staff to concentrate on processing claims rather than chasing after incomplete requests.

Students who intend to claim will find the forms provided for them on the UPP website (www.upp.org.uk). These will need to be filled in and returned to the UPP along with any other relevant documents as stated in Lampiran B.

Please ensure you keep a copy of your receipts for your own reference.

Students are required to post their claims to:

Last weekend (4th December 2010), The BSUnit and BSUnion had an event called BSU DIALOG where representatives from each society will be able to interact and engage in exchange of ideas with one another. BruManch was represented by me (Izzah) and Nana (Our Media Officer).

The official aims of the Dialog are as follows:
1. To promote the exchange of ideas and experiences between all Bruneian societies in order to bridge inter-society gaps with respect to size and activities.
2. To encourage activities that are beneficial not only specific to Bruneian students, but also to Brunei as a country.
3. To help societies achieve recognition with regards to their roles and responsibilities as a Bruneian society in the United Kingdom.

During the Meeting, we had to Deliver one 'short' presentation regarding;

1. The vision and objectives Of the societies
2. 2010-11 Action Plan
3. Expectations from activities
4. Future Events for BruManch.

It went very well, Alhamdulilah. Thank you Nana for accompanied me for the very long day=)

Anyway, another event is coming soon to you guys in this winter weather and it is ICE SKATING. BruManch society are very much happy to anounce ANYONE is welcome, members or non-members. 1.BrUCL – Lost in London 2010

The much anticipated event of the year is here. After a successful first, Lost in London is back for a second year! We’ve heard your voices so this year it is open to all UCL and Bruneian students. So gather your friends in teams of three and come and join for a bit of fun and competition! Make your way through the streets of London and win amazing prizes!

The trail will involve solving cryptic puzzles, finding photo clues, completing checkpoint challenges and many more. Prizes will be awarded to the top 3 teams. The details of prizes will be revealed closer to the date.

It is designed to allow walking to be the most efficient way of getting around. Hence, the usage of buses and tubes are highly not recommended.

Event will start at UCL main quad (closest tube station is Euston Square).

Registration will open on the 1st to 10th November.
Registration fee is £5 for UCL students and £6 for non-UCL Bruneians.

This year Kem Motivasi does not only focus on gaining more knowledge of Islam & history but also to strengthen the relationship between Bruneian students and develop useful leadership skills. Update: Hari Raya AidilAdha!

Salam and Hello everyone!

takbir! Allahu Akhbar, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akhbar!

Alhamdulilah, It's the time of the year we celebrating Hari Raya again! but this time It's Hari Raya AidilAdha. Some called it 'Raya Korban', 'Hari Raya Haji" and some just call it "Free-meat giving day".

INFO: Aidiladha also commemorates the sacrifices made by the prophet Abraham (hence the word "korban" which means sacrifice), who demonstrated immense faith when he was put to the test by God. The prophet was commanded to offer his only son Ishmael up for sacrifice, and though it grieved him greatly, he made ready to perform the task. However, as he was about to strike his son, God stopped him and revealed that it was a trial. Ishmael's life was spared, and a ram sacrificed in his place.

As such, during Aidiladha, the sacrifice of animals such as lambs, goats, cows, bulls and camels is performed. The animals are slain in accordance with the proper religious rites; the meat is then distributed; hence for the "free-meat giving day" name!

One third of the meat is given to the individual who willingly supplied the animal, while the rest is given to the poor and deserving friends and relatives. It is to be noted that this is not a compulsory religious duty, but an obligation for those who are able to afford it.

Anyway, BruManch will be celebrating Hari raya 'AidilAdha', 'Haji' and 'Korban', so I hope you can make yourself available for this event.

Yesterday, we had a Friendly-Match Bowling Tournament with MSSM (Malaysian student society of Manchester) at Parss-wood . It was Great! Although we didn't win anything:p lol. However, Thank you to Our Sports Secretaries Khalil Roslan and Ardina Daud for organizing the awesome event!

CONGRATS to the BruManch Religious Officers on the successful event last weekend. THANK YOU to Ustaz Haji Sammali Hj Adam, our Religious Officer, Cikgu Khalid Haji Sulaiman the Academic Coordinator and Mr Al-Aseer Haji Mohd Yussof, the Financial Attaché from Brunei Student Unit, London for coming visited us far up here in the North! Alhamdulilah, it went so well=)

Thank You to those who came - the BruManchians as well as people from Liverpool & Dundee. Hopefully the event managed to answer all of our doubts regarding our responsibility on performing our daily prayer as a Muslim.

Last but not least, a huge THANKS to those of you who prepared the great meal during that night. It was superb!:)

6:00 - 6:15 PM - Arrival of guests and students
6:15 - 6:30 PM - Arrival of Ustaz Haji Samali & staffs from BSU.
6:30 - 6:40 PM - Doa followed by Welcoming Speech by Mohd Hifdzullah, our RO.
6:40 - 7:50 PM - Ceramah by Ustaz Haji Samali. ( Additional of 15 mins for Q&A Session)
8:15 - 8:20 PM - Closing speech by our RO.

Life as a student is pretty hectic and stressful. Thus, in order to balance the 'emotion', Islam teaches us to read Al-Quran - a great way of relaxing and a way to make your mind peace.

BruManch first weekly Quranic Circle kicked off last Friday, October 15th, 2010 at Zul's crib for the gents and Izzah's 323, Rusholme crib for the ladies. This event will be held on every Friday, insyaAllah.

First of all we would like to WELCOME all new BruManch members/students to our society. We're glad to find out that there are more new students studying in Manchester and we hope you guys will enjoy yourselves spending your time together with us all.

Last weekend, Saturday, October 9th, 2010 was the first event organized by the BruManch Society - the annual BruManch Raya of which the objective of this first event being held during every new academic year, is to get to know new members and of course, selecting our new committee members !

The food were great and it was a great day indeed. Thank you to those of you who prepared the awesome and tasty food and not forgettin' to you guys who helped us to ensure this event went well as planned (of which it's indeed)!

BruManch Talentime & MAD Paintball 2k10

Hey boys and girls! I hope revisions and assignments are coming along well. It's the last strecth before Semester 2, so, HANG IN THERE! =D

Anyway, just a quick update. Don't forget, BruManch Talentime is SOON - 20th February 2010 at the Dancehouse Theatre from 1200 - 1800. More details can be found on the BruManch Talentime website (click!)

And...... MAD PAINTBALL 2k10! It's an annual event held by Brunei Birmingham Student Society in conjunction of Brunei Darussalam's 26th National Day.

I know a lot of you voted paintball as one of the events about 2 months ago, so this is YOUR chance. And show others what we got. (Last year, the girls KICKED SOME SERIOUS bums!). So, email us at brumanch@gmail.com to book your slot for this year's MAD Paintball 2k10!

Not only is it a great way to meet other fellow Bruneians, when is it not FUN to shoot other people with paintball pallets??! PLUS, you get to get down and dirty in the mud, get in some good exercise (you need those muscles to run and CARRY the gun!), and eventhough it stings when you get shot, it's awesome to show off your bruises. MOE and BSU visit to UoM‏

Hello guys !

Just a quick update. Officers from Ministry of Education as well as officers from Brunei Student Unit were here last Tuesday, January 19th, 2010. Meeting was held at John Casken Lecture Theater in Martin Harris Centre, Universit of Manchester. It was the time when officers from both units talked to us all regarding problems that the students are facing while studying here, in Manchester.

Thanks for coming to this gathering eventhough it's the exam season when you guys're supposed to be at home/library doing your revision. Anyhow, best of luck on your remaining exams !
